Vendors Experimenting with Delivery Model for Enterprise RSS Readers

Software, hardware appliance, or hosted service? Enterprise RSS vendors are trying them all.

NewsGator patron Brad Feld[feed] points out in a recent blog post that the company is planning to offer a hosted version of its NewsGator Enterprise Server (in Japan for now). The objection I've heard from prospective customers of such a service is that some of their RSS feeds are generated inside the firewall and can't be routed through a hosted system for security reasons. In a recent interview with BusinessWeek, former Oracle CEO and current Kleiner Perkins VC Ray Lane puts it this way:

I think there's a big concern over data outside the [corporate] firewall. Some companies, even companies like a General Motors (GM), are comfortable with placing their data in the hands of a service provider if they can keep control of it, so they can manage security. But it's going to take a long time for most companies to get comfortable with that--another five years.
But many companies have already made the decision to store their data outside the firewall. (See James Governor's provocative post There is no such thing as a corporate firewall so you might as well store data online.) A hosted solution would be a perfect match for customers of, for instance, salesforce.com and Spanning Salesforce. NewsGator's chief competitor Attensa is trying a different approach by offering its enterprise RSS reader as a hardware appliance. Company CEO Craig Barnes says appliances are the way to go:
The appliance approach is resonating in corporate America and I was surprised to read that it is already 1% of Google's business and growing faster than the mothership! Our new VP Sales, Rich Rudolph, has been down this round before and is leading the effort. Having been down this road with enterprise appliances (and related subscriptions) as VP Sales at Keynote, and Webtrends before that, we are confident that our offerings and our strategy of focusing exclusively on business - are spot on.
At one point NewsGator was also planning on offering a hardware appliance, but I'm not sure if it's still on their price list. (In fact, there's a box with my name on it sitting somewhere in the InfoWorld offices. Hey Wade, send it back!) While hardware appliances certainly reduce installation and configuration complexity--not to mention the matrix of configurations the vendor must support--they bring their own problems too. The vendor has to deal with such mundane issues as inventory, spares, shipping, and remote diagnostics. Customer can't utilize the hardware they've already paid for, and have yet another box to manage.
